Maternity Photo Shoot Makeup Ideas

BEAUTY:

Maternity photo shoots are becoming increasing more popular! Its such a wonderful time to capture those moments that the family is anxiously awaiting the arrival of the new life that is going to bring joy to the family. Expectant mothers these days have their dose of fun with maternity shoots.

Natural makeup is often used to bring out the natural glow and radiance from the mother's skin. Coral and red mixes for the lips can work wonders with minimal peach blush for the cheek bones and minimal color on the eyelids. Expectant mothers aren’t expected to stay put while getting the makeover done for long, which is why keeping the look trendy yet simple at the same time is a must.

Celebrate motherhood and allow the joy of bringing into the world a new life, emanate through your face. A stress-free maternity photo session happens when the experienced photographer and makeup artist knows exactly what look and pose they want.

 WHAT TO WEAR:

Choosing what to wear for photos is often a struggle for people, maternity or not. I recommend having two outfits ready that are timeless. Lean toward solid colors rather than prints to best show your shape, and bring a few different accessories like a flower crown, belt to frame your bump from above, and/or jewelry. If you’re going for an editorial angle, be sure to pack a few pieces you can add at your whim like a long slinky waistcoat or kimono—layering is often the key to making a look feel styled. As for clingy vs flowy, both can work with the right poses but no matter what you wear, be sure there are seamless panties and a good bra underneath.

Here is a list of ideas:

  • Neutral strapless bra and seamless underwear

  • Black bra and panty set (for those black background belly shots)

  • White/ivory bra and panty set (for those white background belly shots)

  • Lingerie sets

  • Tube top or belly band

  • Regular jeans (not maternity ones) and camisole top

  • Buttoned shirt or blouse

  • Long, flowy or form-fitting dress (e.g. tube dress or a summer maxi dress)

  • Button ups sweater or cardigans

  • Men’s button ups top (for significant other/husband)

  • Coordinating outfits (for significant other/husband and/or children)

  • Any favorite scarves, accessories, jewelries, etc.

  • Any sentimental items (e.g. baby ultrasound image)

LOCATION:

Consider the location of your shoot and the advantages/disadvantages of them.

  1. Indoor (e.g. in the home)Advantage in the home is comfort and connection to familiar surroundings. You don’t have to worry about the weather outside. Disadvantage, you have to clean your house so it will look good in the photos. The lighting may not be optimal. Please check with your photographer on how they will address this. Seasoned photographers will use portable off-camera flash if necessary.

  2. StudioAdvantage is convenience and control. You can shoot anytime regardless of the weather.

  3. Outdoor: The natural beauty of a pregnant woman in a beautiful outdoor backdrop is simply breathtaking! The parallel of a mother about to bring to life into the world and Mother Nature is a powerful one. Disadvantages are that the shoot is weather-dependent and shooting hours are limited to the golden hour of sunrise or sunset (when the quality of natural light is at its best). Reschedules can happen and may trigger the rescheduling of other related appointments (e.g. professional makeup and hair artist, florist, venues, etc.) Remember your sunscreen and bug spray! Be prepared to walk/hike to the location and change outfits outdoors.
